Protecting our community from online abuse is a top priority at YouTube. To achieve this, we’ve recently updated our Harassment & Cyberbullying Policy, aiming to create a safer and more inclusive space for everyone. Let’s break down the key points you need to know:
Let us check what is YouTube’s Updated Harassment Policy?
What’s considered harassment?
- Prolonged insults or slurs: This includes targeting someone based on their protected group status (age, disability, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, race), physical attributes, or status as a survivor of sensitive situations.
- Deceiving, shaming, or insulting minors: Content intended to cause distress, trick minors into harmful behavior, or engage in name-calling is strictly prohibited.
Exceptions:
- Educational, documentary, scientific, or artistic content: Debates on public figures, scripted performances (comedy, music), and content raising awareness about harassment may be allowed under specific circumstances.
- Note: Malicious content targeting individuals based on protected group status is never acceptable, regardless of their public profile.
Monetization and penalties:
- Repeatedly encouraging abusive behavior, targeting specific individuals, or exposing them to harm can lead to penalties like content removal, strikes, or even channel termination.
Examples of prohibited content:
- Repeatedly insulting someone’s appearance or using slurs based on protected groups.
- Targeting someone based on their group affiliation and using derogatory terms.
- Spreading harmful conspiracy theories linked to violence against individuals.
- Depicting violence or wishing harm on identifiable individuals.
- Sharing personal information to direct abuse towards someone.
- Encouraging viewers to harass other creators.
- Linking to sites hosting non-consensual intimate imagery.
Remember: This list is not exhaustive. If you’re unsure whether your content complies, it’s best to err on the side of caution.
Consequences of violating the policy:
- First-time offenders may receive a warning and a chance to take a policy training.
- Repeated violations lead to strikes and potential channel termination.
- Severe cases or dedicated harassment channels may result in immediate termination.
Staying safe online:
- Report any content you believe violates this policy.
- For tips on staying safe, check out the Creator Safety Center and Stay Safe on YouTube resources.
- If you feel unsafe due to specific threats, report them directly to law enforcement.
